Baptism

What is Believer’s Baptism?

Believer’s Baptism is where a person declares their belief that Jesus is their Lord and Saviour and their intention to follow him. The person literally follows Jesus in Baptism, being baptised, as Jesus himself was, by being fully immersed in water.

A person does not become a Christian because they are born in a certain country with a Christian heritage. Neither do they do so because this is what their parents or others would wish. Each person needs to come to believe for themselves that Jesus is God’s son, and that he died to save them.

Baptism marks a turning point of having received forgiveness for the wrong things we have done and deciding to live for God with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Believer’s Baptism is practiced in Baptist Churches and many other denominations. Unlike some other Christian denominations, Baptists do not baptise infants, but only those who are of an age to make a clear declaration of their own free will. By means of baptism, a person declares their desire to turn from a life without God to one which is lived for God through Jesus Christ.

Baptism involves the total immersion of a person into water on their own profession of faith. The person usually explains, in their testimony, their story of how they have come to believe in Jesus and why they are being baptised.
